6 Simple Ways to Make Your Coffee Healthier

There is no surprise why coffee is fast becoming one of the most popular beverages around the world. But have you ever wondered — how healthy is coffee? For avid coffee lovers, you’ll be pleased to know that coffee consumption and health are closely linked.

In fact, one cup of coffee per day can make you a better athlete. Moreover, studies have shown coffee to be associated with lowering the risks of several types of cancers, and even neurodegenerative conditions like dementia or Parkinson’s.

We’ve rounded up 6 easy ways to make your next coffee drinking experience a healthier one.

Avoid Artificial Creamer or Sweeteners

If you don’t like the bitter taste of pure coffee or “kopi o kosong”, we recommend going for natural sweeteners such as maple syrup, honey or even dates, to sweeten your brew without putting on the pounds.

However, when using honey, ensure that the temperature of your brew isn’t piping hot — reports have shown that high temperatures may affect antioxidant properties.

If you like your coffee with milk, skip the heavy cream and go for fresh milk or UHT milk instead. Some other alternatives can even be fat-free milk, reduced sugar soy milk or light coconut milk.

Avoid sugar if you can, because a teaspoon of sugar can easily add 20 calories to your daily intake.

Go Back to Black

Black coffees, such as Americanos, espressos, or what we know as Kopi O Kosongs are a great option for your daily cup of Joe.

While coffee may be a low-calorie beverage, adding additional things to your coffee can drastically increase calorie levels and impact your health in the long run.

Add Healthy Spices like Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves or Cardamom

If you’re feeling fancy, try pumpkin spice powder to enhance the flavour profile of your coffee. Don’t skimp on the milk for this one because a latte version brings out the best of this combination.

Choose your Beans

There’s many types of beans available in the market, but Robusta beans are known to have more caffeine per bean than Arabica beans.
